The project consisted of the sensitive refurbishment of the existing St Mary’s Church on the Mayo General Hospital campus for reuse as a state of the art Medical Academy with the provision of a lecture theatre and associated study facilities. Works included comprehensive underpinning of perimeter walls, carried out to incorporate underground in-situ concrete fresh air ventilation ductwork system. Existing finishes & floors were carefully removed and reduced to accommodate complex steel frame & metal deck 1st floor structure whilst complying with heritage conservation report on this listed building. Replacement of the roofs with natural slate & incorporating electrically operated roof lights. Essential maintenance and repair to external stonework, the removal of three stained glass window units to south elevation and relocation of same, the insertion of three contemporary window units to replace relocated stained glass windows, the refurbishment of all remaining stained glass windows including storm glazing and refurbishment of all existing historical doors & ironmongery. The provision of a lecture theatre, study areas (including study pods clad with sheepskin), offices, utility space and ancillary services through subdivision of the existing layout. The refurbishment and repair of the internal joinery, roof trusses and internal existing decorative brickwork and the upgrading of mechanical and electrical services. There was also extensive services connections carried out within the Mayo General Hospital campus.
