PROJECT DETAILS:
Project Name: Belcarra “A” Rated Passive Energy Dwellings
Contract Value: €3.1 million
Location: Belcarra, Co Mayo
Architect: Axo Architects
This project was the construction of 2 no high specification “A” rated, passive energy homes, totalling just over 1100m². The project consisted of 2 no houses with private and semi-private courtyards, external recreational building with storage facilities and a private bar. A variety of construction techniques were employed during the construction incorporating the use of blockwork, structural steel and timber frame. The finishes also varied including zinc cladding & roofing, dry joint natural stone, rendered external insulation system, glazed “floating” staircase & balustrades, marble tile, high monopitch ceilings with hardwood timber, electric frosted glass screens & sliding timber screens integrated into wall build up. Derelict stone buildings were restored & integrated with modern construction to form storage/recreational areas. Both houses achieved the highest building energy rating (BER) “A”, which presented many challenges especially as one of the homes is integrated with a 1980’s bungalow.
